Professor
Christopher Cullen
Professor Cullen
originally trained as an
engineer, and holds an MA from Oxford
in Engineering Science. He has a PhD in Classical Chinese from the School of Oriental
and African Studies, University
of London.
He is
Honorary Professor of the History of East Asian Science, Technology and
Medicine in the University
of Cambridge, and
is a
Fellow of Darwin College.
He was appointed Director of the NRI after spending more than a decade
as
Senior Lecturer in the History of Chinese Science and Medicine in the
Department of History at SOAS. He has published widely, mainly in the
fields of
the history of astronomy, mathematics and medicine in China.
His publications include Astronomy and Mathematics in Ancient China:
the Zhou
bi suan jing, Cambridge
1996, and The Dragon's Ascent, Hong Kong 2001. His latest publication
is a
translation of the Suan shu shu 'Writings on Reckoning' (click here ).
He is General Editor of the Science and Civilisation in China
series,
published by Cambridge University Press, and of the Needham Research
Institute
Studies Series, published by Routledge Curzon.
Professor Cullen is an Honorary Professor of the Chinese Academy
of Sciences, and President of the International Society for the History
of East
Asian Science, Technology and Medicine.
