East Asian History of Science Library
MONOGRAPHS The
Library now holds nearly 30,000 titles, focusing on the history
of Chinese and East Asian traditional science, technology
and medicine. These include three major collectaneous Chinese works:-
the Siku Quanshu 四庫全書,
Daozang 道藏 (Daoist
Canon), and
Dazangjing 大藏經 (Tripitika). Thanks
to the generosity of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the monograph
holdings are now all catalogued on-line in Newton, the Cambridge
University OPAC. Holdings can be accessed either through the Universal
Catalogue or the Affiliated
Institutions catalogue. A
general guide to searching for searching Newton can be found here. Chinese
books are catalogued using non-concatenated Pinyin romanisation, that
means that syllables are not aggregated, e.g Zhong guo nong ye shi. The only
exception is author names in the author
field, e.g. Mao Zedong. Note that personal names are not
aggregated in the title field.
Hyphens and capitalisation may be ignored when searching. Some
of the records have links to full Chinese script records, which may be
viewed by clicking on Chinese record
available for display, while some will automatically display
Chinese script. Our
Chinese holdings are also included in the UK Union
Catalogue of Chinese
Books. Japanese
and Korean records follow Library of Congress conventions, the modified
Hepburn system of romanisation for Japanese and McCune-Reischauer for
Korean. Some information is also provided in original script for these
records. |
