Joseph Needham Photographs - Wartime China, 1942-1946 |
4 photographs with accompanying text given to Joseph Needham by Zeng Sheng 曾省 (1899-1968), an entomologist at National Szechuan University, while Dr. Needham was Director of the Sino-British Science Co-operation Office in Chongqing, China from 1943-1946. They depict Professor Zeng taking part in an educational campaign to promote improvements in tobacco growing for farmers near Chengdu 成都, Sichuan province under the auspices of the Agricultural Promotion and Improvement Committee of the Executive Yuan, National Szechwan University and Nanking University. They are undated, though one appears in Needham's book Chinese Science, published in 1945.

In a village of Pie-hsien of Szechwan Province, one of the important tobacco-grown areas, in front of the theatre, a great number of peasants during market-day came to attend the meeting and to listen Dr. Tseng lecture. There was a flag on which the Chinese characters were written notifying that it is a Tobacco Improvement meeting under the auspices of the Agr. Promotion and Improvement Committee of the Executive Yuan, the National Szechwan University and the Nanking University. Beside the flag a spraying apparatus was placed.
