Photographs of personnel, products and activities of the Scientific Apparatus Supply Service factory, Supoqiao, Chengdu, set up by the Szechwan Provincial Bureau of Scientific Instruments. Dr. Needham acquired them in two groups. Nos. 1-16 are loose, individual photographs, while nos. 17-28 are pasted onto a board with brief descriptions and a longer piece about the Szechwan Provincial Bureau of Scientific Instruments. Dr. Needham visited the factory between 3rd and 14th May, 1943.

Original caption: A Sketch of the Szechwan Provincial Bureau of Scientific Instruments.
The Szechwan Provincial Bureau of Scientific Instruments is the outgrowth of the present war blockade since the beginning of the Sino-Japanese hostility. In 1938, a Committee of Scientific Instruments was organised by the Szechwan Commission of Education for purchasing and distributing scientific instruments for provincial schools. It was soon considered that for supplying instruments of high quality, manufacturing under the supervision of specialists and experts is necessary. Thus the present Bureau was at first established as a division of the Commission and subsequently as a self-supporting public business organisation under the supervision of the Szechwan Provincial Government.
This Bureau manufactures biological, chemical and physical apparatus, chemicals, charts and models which are used for the purposes of demonstrations and student experiments mainly in middle schools and partly in colleges. Since 1942, its manufacture has extended to cover instruments for nature study and tools for manual work in primary schools. There are 514 different kinds of instruments put out by the Bureau and 4300 whole sets (each set consists of 50 to 80 pieces of apparatus) have been turned out since its establishment. The Bureau has supplied 1500 schools distributed not only in Szechwan but also in other provinces of Free China.
The prospect of the Bureau is rather promising. For several years, it has been a pioneer and the only factory for manufacturing scientific apparatus in Free China. Viewing the great service this Bureau has rendered, the Ministry of Education has recently established a factory of similar nature. The two will be supplementary to each other so as to meet greater demand. When the complete victory is won, the school will be better financed and scientific education will be more stressed that it is now; one can predict definitely the prosperity and responsibility of this Bureau.
