BA - Border Region 陝甘寧邊區

Photographs of scientific activities and education in and around Yan'an, Shaanxi province, an area controlled by the Chinese Communist Party. They are from an official Communist Party source, passed on to Dr. Needham by the senior Communist Party member Lin Zuhan 林祖函 (Lin Boqu 林伯渠, 1886-1960), who Needham met in Chongqing in July 1944. It is also possible that some came from Israel Epstein (1915-2005), who published his article 'Scientific Research and Education in the Border Region' in the China Aid Council Bulletin in January 1945.
